Private concessions may drive off-road and work with spotlights at night; national parks may not. That difference explains why Sabi Sand counts sightings per day and Kruger per week. Book at least 3 nights in one lodge so trackers can work out a territory.
The leopard is Africa’s most beautiful and most elusive predator. Sabi Sand borders Kruger and is known as the best place in the world to see them, with habituated animals and trackers who read spoor like a newspaper. A leopard with prey in a marula tree is the photo photographers come back for.
Vulnerable. Declining worldwide, but stable in protected areas of southern Africa.

Parks: Serengeti, Tarangire · best months June, July, August, September, October (June to October)
Spotlight photography asks for high ISO and a fast shutter. By day in trees, 200 to 400 mm with an open aperture works against the branches.
Moderately suitable. Sightings often fall late in the evening. Pick a family lodge with a morning programme for children.
Combines with lion, wild dog and hyena on the same night drive. Sabi Sand gives leopard plus lion in one evening.

Certainty does not exist, but Sabi Sand gives an above-80-percent chance with 3 nights thanks to habituated animals and off-road trackers.
The leopard is muscular with rosettes and climbs trees. The cheetah is slim with spots and tear marks and hunts by day on open plains.
Leopards drag kills of up to 100 kilos into a tree to protect them from lions and hyenas. Such a larder betrays their presence.
Lodges cost 500 to 1,500 euros per person per night all-inclusive. Count on 3 nights for a realistic chance.
Not to vehicles. On foot they are unpredictable, which is why walking safaris in leopard country are only allowed with an armed ranger.
May to September in southern Africa, June to October in Tanzania. Dry vegetation and nightly activity around water.
