Rhinos are solitary and night-active; by day they rest in dense thickets. Ask guides specifically for recent tracks and plan 3 to 4 days in southern Kruger, where the density is highest. Private concessions with trackers on foot double the chance.

About the Rhino

The rhino is the hardest member of the Big Five to find, which is exactly why it sits on every bucket list. Kruger and Hluhluwe-Imfolozi in South Africa hold the largest protected populations and experienced rangers. Hluhluwe brought the species back last century from about 100 animals to thousands.

Near threatened. The southern white rhino numbers about 16,000 thanks to intensive protection. The black rhino remains critically endangered.

Where do I have the best chance of rhinos?

Southern Kruger and Hluhluwe-Imfolozi in South Africa. Both parks manage intensively protected populations with daily monitoring.

Will I see a white or a black rhino?

Almost always the white rhino, a grazer of open plains. The black rhino is shyer and lives in dense scrub; best chance in the Ngorongoro Crater.

Why is the rhino endangered?

Poaching for the horn. In peak years South Africa lost more than 1,000 animals per year. Dehorning and heavily guarded zones are turning the tide locally.

What does a rhino trip cost?

South Africa self-drive is the cheapest: 2,200 to 4,000 euros per person for 10 days. Private lodges with trackers add 500 to 1,200 euros per night.

Can I approach rhinos on foot?

Only with an armed ranger in designated concessions, at a minimum of 100 meters. Getting out is forbidden in national parks.

What is the best time?

May to September. Dry grass and waterholes concentrate the animals. In the green season they disappear into high vegetation.
