June to August is the peak in Husavik with up to 10 whales per trip, including humpbacks, minkes and sometimes blue whales. Pick a small RIB for eye-level views or a classic oak boat for stability. Morning trips have the calmest sea.
Husavik in northern Iceland is considered Europe’s whale capital with sightings on more than 95 percent of summer trips. Humpbacks come for herring and capelin and show themselves with tail slaps and breaches dozens of meters from the boat. Tofino in Canada is the alternative with grey whales in spring.
Not threatened. The humpback population recovered from about 5,000 to more than 135,000 animals after the whaling ban.
From a RIB you shoot at water level. Keep 70 to 200 mm ready and focus on the spot where the whale dived; it surfaces within 5 to 8 minutes.
Very suitable. Trips last 2 to 3 hours, warm suits are on board and children often sail at a discount.
Combines with puffins, seals and waterfalls on the Diamond Circle. Husavik plus Myvatn is the classic 2-day trip.

Husavik in Iceland with sightings on more than 95 percent of summer trips. Humpbacks come within 30 meters of the boat.
July and August. June is also excellent with the midnight sun. April and May give grey whales in Canada as an alternative.
Humpbacks breach regularly, especially young animals. Do not count on it, but the chance is real on every summer trip.
Husavik’s bay is sheltered. RIBs move more than the big boats. If in doubt, take a pill an hour before.
A trip costs 80 to 150 euros per person. A week in Iceland with car and stays comes to 1,800 to 3,000 euros.
Yes, around Olafsvik in western Iceland from November to March when they follow the herring. Summer orcas are rare.
